Are container homes a good idea?

They may be the greatest idea in home building history. An increasing majority of people realize what a smart idea cargo containers homes are, whether that’s for durability, sustainability, recycling, efficiency, the wow! factor, or lots of other benefits. But sadly about 90% of the builds we see online are done incorrectly. Some of these folks actually do follow-up videos, detailing their grave mistakes.

Of course, as with any industry, there’s a few critics out there who, as far as we can tell, only criticize the concept in hopes of getting clicks on their YouTube channel. They watch people doing it wrong, and say therefore it must be a bad idea. Well, that’s just like saying, because someone put their tires on backwards, cars should not have tires.

Done the correct way, we believe container homes are the ultimate evolution of home building. From fire to steel to energy efficiency, our container homes combine innovations of every age of human history, to make the strongest, most fun and affordable homes in the world.

While we do offer optional add-ons (wood stoves, bunk beds, custom exterior camouflage reeds), we are not otherwise customizing our homes. The reasons are two-fold:

1) Often customizations make the structure weaker, and at HuntingContainers.com we only sell the strongest, stormproof houses.

2) The cost and delivery time would skyrocket. We’ve worked hard to create the best small homes we can. So in order to keep them affordable, we don’t customize on an individual basis.

As many as you want. The homes are built to be stacked. Some folks buy a 40 footer, stack a 20 footer on top and then a 20 foot deck. Some folks buy a couple dozen, lay them out in a ring with a fire pit in the middle. Whatever you like.

The electrical panel on the rear exterior wall is ready to be hooked up however you like: generator, RV hook-up, hardwired to a meter, solar and/or batteries.

Ditto. Hook it up to a tank, a pump, a well, or a water line.

FYI, many people choose to keep these homes “dry.” They use water jugs at the sinks. Then have the water drain out into a garden or the woods, anywhere that’s environmentally safe. Some even just dig a hole under the toilet outlet. These Hunting Containers are built for luxury, but no reason you can’t go rough with them.

We’re happy to quote you the best price from the transporters we work with. Or you’re welcome to arrange shipping from our facility in Harvey, Louisiana, 70058, yourself. Delivery is not included in the cost.

The entire front side is made of windows and sliding glass doors. But you can shut the actual containers doors over them to protect them. We don’t cut out additional windows because

Windows = Weakness.

1) As soon as you cut into the sides of a steel cargo container, you greatly compromise its structural integrity. Sadly, the world is full of people and companies who learned this the hard way. Windows are a nuisance at best, and deadly at worst.

2) Windows are the best way to let wind and water and critters in.

3) Our structures are virtually maintenance free because they don’t have windows or extra doors. With added windows and doors, containers become like RVs or campers, and you need to check and reseal the windows on a continual basis. If you don’t, they can crack, rain gets in, and you come back to find the structure destroyed.

4) Security. A concern no matter where you are. But especially if you’re leaving your container home for extended periods. With our easy-open container doors and safety locking system, a burglar would have to bring some very serious welding equipment. But if you introduce windows and doors, you might come back to find someone’s not only lived in there, but emptied the place.

Our thinking is: Why give up space, if you’re not getting something strong in return?

If you like doing maintenance, and exposing your home to weather and critters and burglars, perhaps consider buying a wood structure or a camper. We’ve personally witnessed thousands of those kinds of homes get destroyed, and their owners lose it all.

The way we build, all you do is lock up when leave. And when you come back, whether that’s days or decades later, it should look exactly the same — no matter what mother nature threw at it.

Set it and forget it.

ABOUT JOSH & JOHN, THE FOUNDERS:

At HuntingContainers.com, we know firsthand the challenges of losing everything to storms and the frustrations of constant home maintenance. That’s why founders Joshua Clark and John Hubert combined their decades of expertise in sustainable construction and property management to create virtually indestructible, maintenance-free homes.

Our mission is simple: provide homes that stand the test of time, delivering unmatched durability, comfort, and peace of mind. From the Louisiana bayou to the harshest environments on Earth, our container homes are built to last—and built for you.

JOSHUA CLARK has overseen durable, sustainable housing construction on five continents, from the Louisiana bayou to Africa to the Mojave Desert to the Yukon. A decade after helping hundreds of people who lost their homes to Hurricane Katrina (and documenting them in his award-winning memoir Heart Like Water), Clark lost his own home in Hurricane Ida. He set out to rebuild something that would last generations, that could take the worst of wind and water and anything else mother nature threw at it. And yet also feel like a true home, something luxurious, a little rustic, and timeless.

An outspoken advocate for saving Louisiana’s wetlands, Clark’s writing has appeared in newspapers and magazines across the world, including The Wall Street Journal and Consumer Affairs, and he served as a correspondent for National Public Radio. A film and music producer, and bestselling author, his books have been translated into 15 languages. He received an Economics degree from Yale University. When he’s not overseeing the construction of container homes, he spends as much time as he can on his bayou property, living off-grid.

JOHN HUBERT, an actor and musician with a worldwide following, began his career in property management as a teenager, through lawn care. Within a few years, he became #1 nationwide in New Customer Development at Tru Green Lawn Care. So he opened his own lawn care company, expanding to power equipment sales and service, as well as landscape and nursery divisions. He added Christmas tree sales and decoration divisions, firewood, and selling and servicing golf carts. The golf carts took off, literally and figuratively. Kaddy Shack Kustom Kartz was born. His company used licensed molds of actual ’34 Fords, ’53 Corvettes, Jeeps and Hummers and dropped them over the carts, turning them into “Neighborhood Electric Vehicles.” The tax incentives the government first gave John were lucrative, but also his company’s demise. Because they drove Chrysler, General Motors, and Honda into the market, crushing his small business.

So he gave his childhood dream (music) another shot. After touring the world as the singer for three different heavy metal bands, he made movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Matt Dillon, William Defoe, and others. While John still acts to this day, he’s also heavily invested in real estate in Louisiana, which led him to meet his good friend and partner Joshua Clark.

Together, after decades of owning and managing properties, they became exhausted by the never-ending maintenance, repairs and renovations a typical home needs. They vowed to be spend more money and time actually enjoying life instead. So they worked with architects, designers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers and welders, to create virtually maintenance-free and invincible homes. And HuntingContainers.com was born.
